Sylhet Tour: from swamp to hill

A day spent well in Jaflong; the beauty of Sylhet

“Finally, we are here”, that is how our Sylhet trip started. We didn’t feel excited until we reached there. As we planned, we went for our lunch at “Pach Bhai Hotel”, a renowned restaurant in Sylhet. This restaurant is known for its few special dishes like different types of bhorta, beef & chicken items. We ordered and enjoy each and every bhorta they served. After a great lunch, we headed for Sylhet city tour and planned for our next destination “Jaflong”.

We left for jaflong very early in the morning and had our breakfast at a local hotel in the city. We ordered usual breakfast items like paratha, daal bhaji, dim and lastly a cup of tea. I have never had such delicious Malai Cha in my whole life. if I visit Sylhet again, I will search for that restaurant only for their Malai Cha. It took us a few hours to reach Jaflong as it was a little bit far from the city.

Jaflong is such a beautiful place and a perfect combination of water and hills. Water was so fresh & transparent that the stones under the water were visible as well.

We left that place after a couple of hours because we had to cover other places before sunset. There was a Cha Bagan close to Jaflong and we didn’t want to miss that, so we also went for Cha Bagan. In the meantime, we took potato chips, biscuits and drinks as our lunch. We would have wasted a lot of time if we had stopped somewhere for lunch. That’s why we decided not to stop and continued our journey. 

Ratargul in Sylhet

We left for city before sunset and planned our dinner at “Panshi”, another famous restaurant in Sylhet. As soon as we entered to the restaurant, we decided our menu instantly as the whole restaurant smelt like delicious Hilsa fried. So, we had Hilsa fry with plain rice and specially ordered their dessert items as well. Dinner was done and we were about to leave that area but suddenly we realized that we want to have the famous “Agun Paan”. Without trying “Agun Paan” the tour would have been incomplete. They set it on fire as soon as that paan is ready and after that we can have that paan. That is the speciality of “Agun Paan”. It tasted so different when I started feeling different types of spices in it. Though I was afraid at the beginning but ended up having one more of it. That day’s after dinner part was thrilling.

The next day we had our breakfast with a common dish of Sylhet and that was “koyeler mangsho”. Then we went to Bichhnakandi & enjoyed the beauty of it for a few hours and then, had our lunch there at a local restaurant. On the same day, we also visited Ratargul by boat. That long boat journey was relaxing and the view was as well. 

As we heard a lot about Shatkora and how the Sylheti people have it with beef, we decided to have it and started looking for a restaurant nearby, and luckily, we got one. I knew that the taste of Shatkora is usually sour so, I may not like it with beef but that dish changed my view about Shatkora. My last dinner in Sylhet wasn’t a disaster and that’s a big relief. The next morning, we left for Chittagong with lots of memories, pictures and tired looks. 

Tour relieves our mental fatigue and teaches us about a new culture, food and lifestyle. And every new place has its own speciality. So we should explore as much as we can.
