Who doesn’t like fruit as versatile as a watermelon? Everyone at least once in their childhood has eaten a pyramid or boat-shaped cut watermelon. Watermelon is very rich in water content. It contains 92% water. That is why we call it a watermelon. In Bangladesh, people eagerly wait for the summer season to have fresh watermelon. It brings a refreshing change to the body after a tiring summer day. It tastes delicious and it is very healthy at the same time. Watermelon is a large oval-shaped fruit which has green skin. Its inside consists of pulpy red-colored flesh and small black seeds.
Watermelon can be considered as a vegetable too because gardeners grow it as one but as it tastes sweet we like it as a refreshing fruit to have. The large fruit is a source of lycopene, which is an antioxidant that reduces the risk of several kinds of cancer such as prostate, lung and stomach etc.
There are various types of watermelon. We can count approximately 1200 varieties. It is grouped into 4 kinds, seeded, seedless, icebox and yellow or orange. Icebox is the smallest-sized watermelon. That is why we can call it a personal-size watermelon. The most loved variety of watermelon is the crimson sweet one. It is a seeded watermelon and deep red in color with sweet flesh.
